Ukraine - Irpin Halfway Home for Adult Orphans

Irpin Halfway Home for Adult Orphans

( #15 on the list of Social Projects to Help Ukraine.
https://ukrainesocialprojects.blogspot.com )

Adult orphans are those children who, once they reach the age of 18, have to leave the state dormitories and fend for themselves in the real world.  Most of these young adults are not prepared for real life.  They need coaching, they need adult monitoring and a family environment, they need to feel wanted and loved.  Many children would want to learn a trade, continue studying or find a job to become independent.  But  since this is all easier said than done, many children become desperate and turn to vagrancy with all its implications.

A small old house already connected to water, electricity and gas, fit to be a halfway home, has been located in a quiet, safe area in the town of Irpin on the outskirts of Kyiv, 15 km from the metro.  It needs to be rebuilt with a sewer system and basic amenities installed in the house to make it livable and comfortable for four young adult orphans to feel at home.  There will be nothing superfluous ... only the strict necessary.  The building will be sober.  There will be no useless furniture, or obsolete objects.  The children will have a clean, bright, safe and comfortable home environment to facilitate their passage from a dormitory setting to a more normal life environment.  The children will run the home under the guidance of an adult. They will be encouraged to take part in the management of the house from cleaning to groceries buying.

This halfway home will be a temporary family home for those youngsters who want to help themselves to start a new life relying mainly on themselves. They will be guided in choosing activities and courses that will provide them with tools to self develop, to help others in need, and to slowly but surely establish the foundations for financial independency without becoming victim of the consumer society traps.

The home will be a smoke-free, alcohol-free, drug-free, bad-habits-free environment.  The youngsters will learn to live a healthy life, to care for ecology, to care for animals, to do volunteer work, to get involved in their community by providing assistance to the needy, and those who already provide such services.  By getting involved, the children will, by the same token, learn the basics of administration, activities coordination, time planning and other skills which will allow them to gain self-confidence by taking various responsibilities and being self-disciplined.  Children will learn to be community leaders, to do volunteer work, to devote themselves to good actions, good thoughts, and keep good on their word.

This halfway home project will be self-sustainable but initially it needs YOUR SUPPORT for 75,350 USD to enable the purchase of the land plot (400m2) with the old house, to fence the property, to do the rebuilding works (80m2), and the clean-up of the territory from old shacks and debris.  There is a small orchard on the land plot behing the house, and there is room for a small greenhouse, which will contribute to initiate the adult orphans to permaculture and gardening, which will generate fresh fruits and vegetables for their own consumption and even maybe for resale, which, together with the production of handicrafts, will render the project self-sustainable.

We are appealing to 2,520 individuals to donate $1/day for one month ($30 each) to help set up this halfway home for young adult orphans, who are not cared for, neither by the state nor by the society who now is busy, since 2014, in supporting the Ukrainian soldiers at the front because of the war, which started with the russian invasion of Eastern Ukraine.
